My History
Born in Illinois, brought up in Wisconsin, I have a
bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

A world traveler since age 18, I settled in Hong Kong
and resided there for 27 years. In addition to
extensive travel throughout Asia during those years,
I worked as a graphic designer, technical
photographer and entrepreneur. In 1993 I had a solo
exhibition of paper mache containers and later
taught paper mache techniques to adults. During
1995-1997, I designed and edited a quarterly
magazine while also operating my own costume
rental business.

I  relocated to Seattle in 1997, sold my costume
collection and in 1999, married and opened a studio
specializing in paper casting of locally acquired
antique architectural details. In mid-2000, my
husband and I moved to Angels Camp, California. A
year later, yet another move meant having to set-up
my studio a third time as part of our home in Fresno.

Following a lifelong interest in paper, I use the
material as a scuptural medium. The paper castings
usually begin with a clay original, from which a mold
is made and then cast using paper pulp which I make
myself. Using cut fragments of these casts, I
assemble designs for my wall reliefs like a mosaic,
gluing them to a paper backing and using paper
mache as a filler to combine shapes and create a
unified appearance. The final piece is then painted
with many layers of color and may be cast again.
Paper castings are always made in limited editions of
10 or 20 and no two are ever painted exactly the
same. Richly colored and textured, my multi-layered
relief surfaces are both durable and lightweight.
Wires attached to the back enable them to be hung
unframed.

My new works in progress include abstract and
pictorial imagery that combine collage and painted
cast paper. These works are created as a framed
single unit or as an unframed series of three or four
units that have a double thickness to give them more
visual solidity.

Working with paper allows me to combine my love of
color and texture to make original relief sculptures
and in the process, create art out of recycled
materials.
